CHENNAI: Billroth Hospitals has successfully begun using a Dual Source CT Scanner (DSCT) which offered unprecedented image quality at the lowest radiational exposure to patients, said Rajesh Jeganathan, managing director of the hospitals. At a function to share the applications of DSCT, Dr. Jeganathan said the Dual Source CT Scanner has twice the speed over conventional 64 slice CT scanner at half the radiation dose. This high end CT scanner gives accurate results for its multiple applications in cardio, neuro, ortho, abdomen, paediatric, CT angiography and special CT procedures. The hospital's radiology team has been able to obtain full cardiac detail with lowest radiation dose for the past four months. It was non-invasive and the great advantage was that it required no pre-medication, he said, adding that the installation of DSCT has taken patient care to the next level. In his keynote speech, Thorsten R.C. Johnson, associate professor of radiology, University Hospital of Munich, Germany, said the DSCT was a very reliable diagnostic tool with a very high accuracy. Scanning with a single source CT scanner required the heart to be slowed down which could cause complications. DSCT could scan any heart rate without the need of beta-blockers, he said. The dual energy CT applications were ready for routine clinical use with standardised protocols in lung perfusion, kidney stone differentiation, bone removal/direct angiography and virtual enhanced reconstruction, said Mr. Johnson. Billroth hospitals radiologist K.S. Sekhar shared his team's experience in the application of DSCT.
