Improving infrastructure:Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology A. Raja after inaugurating Vyasarpadi post office building in Chennai on Saturday. Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian is in the picture. CHENNAI: The National E-governance Programme, to link the entire nation administratively, will be completed within the next two years, A. Raja, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, has said. Work is on at a hectic pace to provide the connectivity that will facilitate this e-governance. In two years' time, he added, paperless administration will become possible. The National E-Governance Programme is an effort to provide cross-country linkages between the Central and State governments, including district and village administrative agencies. It is being implemented at a cost of Rs.10,000 crore, he said. The Minister was speaking at the inaugural of a post office building at Vyasarpadi in north Chennai. With the advancement of communication technology, there was the danger that the reliable postal service would go out of fashion. But, the Union Ministry was dedicated to keep the postal service alive and vibrant, investing fresh funds towards maintaining and upgrading existing post offices, as part of Project Arrow. The Centre had sanctioned Rs.500 crore for Project Arrow. So far, as part of the project, 173 post offices in Tamil Nadu had been refurbished and 80 new post offices would be set up by the year-end. Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Raja said the Union Home Ministry had made a presentation on banning the Blackberry service. “Discussions are on and we will have a resolution soon.” Offering felicitations on the occasion, North Chennai Member of Parliament T.K.S. Elangovan said over the last six years, there was tremendous improvement in telecommunications and information technology in the country. Perambur MLA K.Mahendran complained of indifferent BSNL signal in the north Chennai area and requested the Minister to get the institution to set up more towers in the area.
