Federation hopeful of IOA, Govt. support

NEW DELHI: The Indian Weightlifting Federation is hopeful that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the government would help it in arranging the funds to pay the huge fine slapped on it by the International Weightlifting Federation(IWF).

The IWF had imposed a fine of $ 500,000 on the Indian federation after six of its lifters returned positive results in an out-of-competition test conducted by the international body last year. India will be barred from participating in international meets if it fails to pay the fine.

So far, the Indian federation had managed to pay $125,000 in two instalments.

“We have requested the IOA to pay Rs. 1 crore and the government to pay Rs. 1 crore. We are ready to repay the amount,” Indian federation President B.P. Baisya told reporters here on Saturday. August 31 is the deadline for paying the fine.

On the opening day of the trials held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Complex auditorium, K. Ravi Kumar, in 69kg category, surpassed the National marks in snatch (141kg), clean and jerk (180kg) and total (321kg).

Meanwhile, the venue continued to give headaches to the organisers. There was a bigger concern about the warm-up hall, situated just behind the competition platform. There were vibrations as the lifters trained simultaneously.
