KOCHI: The Government has sanctioned Rs. 2 crore as asset maintenance fund for renovating the wards in the District General Hospital. This would give a new look to the wards that are housed in the old buildings in the premises. The old wards include maternity ward, children's ward, orthopaedic, isolation and a portion of the male medical ward. The works have been tendered and it would involve new flooring, plastering and wiring in all these wards. The work is expected to be completed in three months. While the work would upgrade the hospital in providing modern facilities in all the wards, it is not part of the drive for quality control as per the norms of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH), said Junaid Rehman, the Hospital Superintendent. Computerisation process is on at the Hospital as part of the NABH guidelines for which National Informatics Centre has provided the software. The Out-Patient registration has been fully computerised at the hospital. The Hospital would be seeking more funds from the Government to complete the computerisation process so that all the Out-Patient departments are computerised too. The process is expected to take more time as the number of OP patients is huge at the hospital. The Hospital Development Fund would be able to provide funds of about Rs. 4-5 lakh to complete the project for the time being, said Dr. Rehman. The hospital had recently expanded new cancer wards added to the Oncology department and installed a new laparoscope for keyhole surgeries. Three operation theatres including one emergency theatre are functioning at present.
