Work to improve pass percentage, teachers urged

Special Correspondent

‘Educators should continuously monitor students' progress'

Lack of teachers' commitment blamed for poor pass percentage

Model question papers to be supplied to 10th standard students from August

GULBARGA: Additional Commissioner of the North-eastern Directorate of Education Abdul Rab has said that teachers should double their efforts to provide quality education and continuously monitor the academic progress of students to improve the pass percentage in SSLC examinations in the district.

He was speaking after inaugurating a four-day refresher course in Science for teachers in government, aided and unaided high schools here, organised by the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy, P.S. Shankar Pratishthan and the Department of Public Instructions, at Dr. Ambedkar Degree College here on Friday.

Mr. Rab blamed the teachers' lack of commitment to providing quality education for the poor pass percentage.

He said they should emulate the teachers in government schools in Bangalore (Rural) district who adopted at least two students from their classes and took responsibility of all their academic activities in the 10th standard.

These teachers continuously monitored the academic development of their students. This had the required results in the final examinations.

Scoring tips

Mr. Rab said the directorate had decided to supply model question papers to the SSLC students from August. By January 2011, 20 sets of model question papers in all subjects would be supplied. Besides evaluating the performance of the students, the teachers should help them by providing basic tips on how to answer these questions, he said.

From January, the directorate would conduct a series of mock examinations in all subjects to prepare students for the SSLC examination, he added.

Member of the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy P.S. Shankar spoke on the occasion. Governor of the Rotary Club Neville Irani presided.
