People take holy dip on ‘Adi Amavasai'

Nagercoil: Hundreds of people from different parts of the district took holy dip in various water bodies in view of ‘Adi Amavasai' particularly in the sea at Kanyakumari, the Tambirabarani at Kuzhuthurai, Pazhayar after performing ‘Pali Tharppanam (rituals performed in remembrance of their ancestors)' on Monday.

According to sources, the sanctum sanctorum of important temples were thrown open to the devotees in the early hours of Monday. Special pujas and abishekams were also performed to the presiding deities.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Madurai division) also operated special buses from various destinations to these places for the benefit of the people.

The district administration had also declared a local holiday in view of ‘Adi Amavasai' in the district. More than one lakh people visited the Vaubali exhibition at Kuzhuthurai. The exhibition was started during 1926 for those visiting Kuzuthurai to facilitate them to offer rituals in memory of their ancestors on the banks of the Tamirabarani.

Various cultural programmes were also performed at the exhibition to attract people from all walks of life. The highlight of the exhibition was to give importance to the agriculturists and their produce. The seedlings of various plants were on sale. The exhibition that began on July 28 would be conducted for 20 days.
