Importance of Sanskrit study
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: The Government has identified 142 acres for developing a campus for the recently established Sanskrit University, Minister for Higher Education Arvind Limbavali has said.
Speaking at a function organised to felicitate the first Vice-Chancellor of the university Mallepuram G. Venkatesh by a couple of private forums here on Monday, Mr. Limbavali said that study of Sanskrit had now become vital for those pursuing higher studies. There were 12 such Sanskrit universities working in that direction in the country, he added.
Mr. Limbavali said the Government could not get the Bill on establishing the university passed in both the Houses of the legislature initially. However, the legislature passed the Bill later after he convinced the Opposition leaders.
Contrary to the apprehensions of the Opposition, the Government had Prof. Venkatesh, a Dalit, in mind for the post well before the Bill was passed. He had disclosed this to the Opposition leaders.
A.J. Sadashiva, retired judge, said it was the irony of times that people who were once not accepted by the then champions of Sanskrit were now making efforts for the cause of Sanskrit.
K.E. Radhakrishna, writer, made the introductory remarks. Prof. Venkatesh spoke.
G. Venkatasubbaiah, lexicographer, presided over the programme.
