Bangalore: The State Government has decided to set up a cone dyeing unit on 35 acres at Rabkavi-Banahatti in Bagalkot district for the benefit of small and marginal weavers. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Minister for Textiles and Youth Goolihatti D. Shekar said the estimated cost of the unit is Rs. 10 crore and it would be set up on a PPP model with participation of weavers. The unit is expected to benefit 15,000 weavers of the district. The government has released Rs. 2 crore to the proposed project, he said. Following reluctance on the part of nationalised banks to grant loans at 3 per cent interest to weavers, the department has set up a cooperative bank in Bagalkot district with the capital support of weavers. The bank had been extending loans ranging from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 to weavers at the rate of 3 per cent. If weavers show interest, similar kind of cooperative banks would be established in other districts. About 7,000 weavers of Bagalkot and Belgaum districts have availed themselves of loans at the rate of 3 per cent from cooperative and nationalised banks, he said. Mr. Shekar said a handloom exhibition would be organised from August 13 to 20 in Bangalore.
