Plan to prettify Yelahanka for foreigners

Staff Reporter

Mayor says they can stop to smell the roses on way

to airport

Bangalore: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to develop Yelahanka into a recreational hub. The civic authority envisages rejuvenating the Yelahanka lake, with help from the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), and developing a new amusement park on the waterfront at an estimated cost of Rs. 104 crore.

The project, to be completed in 18 months, has been planned keeping in mind foreign tourists. Given its proximity to the airport, BBMP officials and local representatives, including MLA S.R. Vishwanath and Mayor S.K. Nataraj, expect the lake to attract tourists.

“The plan is to ensure that tourists who have the time will have recreational facilities on the way to the airport,” said Mr. Nataraj, who inspected development works in Yelahanka zone on Tuesday.

To facilitate the connectivity to the park, the BBMP is planning to build a ‘necklace' road connecting the lake to the airport at a cost of Rs. 54 crore. The civic authority has started the process of acquiring 22 acres and 27 guntas of private land to build the road and other recreational facilities.

“We will utilise 13 acres and six guntas for building the 1.8-km ‘necklace' road and the remaining 9 acres and 13 guntas to build a parking bay and recreational facilities, including toy train, boating and fountains. It will be developed on par with Lumbini Garden on Nagawara Lake,” the BBMP officials said.

Meanwhile, the BDA will assist in the project by funding Rs. 60 crore for the lake rejuvenation programme, including a water fountain and a bird watching island in the centre of the lake. During his visit, the Mayor visited three lakes — Allalasandra, Yelahanka and Atturu.
