Monitoring panel of Cauvery River Authority to meet

T. Ramakrishnan

CHENNAI: The Monitoring Committee of the Cauvery River Authority will meet in New Delhi on August 24 against the backdrop of rising deficit in receipt of Cauvery water for Tamil Nadu.

The present storage position of reservoirs in the Cauvery basin is one of the items on the agenda of the meeting. Chief Secretaries of the Basin States – Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry – are members of the committee apart from the Chairman of the Central Water Commission. The Union Water Resources Secretary heads the committee.

Till now, 24 meetings of the committee have been held. Senior officials here say the previous meeting took place in March.

45 tmcft shortfall

According to the interim order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, Tamil Nadu should have realised around 70 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) since June 1.

As of now, it had received about 25 tmcft, a shortfall of 45 tmcft. On Tuesday, the water level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 86.7 ft (full level: 120 ft) and storage was 45 tmcft (capacity: 93.47 tmcft). Inflow was 7,000 cubic second per feet (cusecs) and discharge, 4,000 cusecs.

The officials say the combined storage of Karnataka reservoirs is around 87 tmcft against the total capacity of 114 tmcft. As the situation is improving, Karnataka can meet the shortfall substantially, if not fully.

Tamil Nadu Principal Secretary (Public Works) S. Ramasundaram had gone to Bangalore last week and met his counterpart.

New Chairman

A change of guard at the Cauvery Technical Cell has taken place quietly with R. Subramanian, former Chief Engineer, replacing A. Mohanakrishnan as Chairman. Mr. Mohanakrishnan, who had been heading the Cell for 20 years, holds the post of Advisor (Water Resources) to the State government.
