CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday handed over permits to 10 persons for liquified petroleum gas (LPG)-run autorickshaw vehicles. They are among 8,000 persons chosen for granting new permits. Of the total number of beneficiaries, 3,100 persons belong to Chennai and 4,900 to other parts of the State, according to an official release. In May, the government lifted a 12-year-long ban on giving permits for new autorickshaws. After this, 55,000 persons from Chennai and 23,000 from the rest of the State applied for the permits.
The release stated that steps were being taken for converting all petrol-run autorickshaws to LPG-run vehicles. In Chennai, 27 LPG refilling stations were functioning. Indian Overseas Bank had earmarked Rs.100 crore to provide financial assistance for purchase of such vehicles. On the occasion, the Chief Minister gave away appointment orders to five persons recruited to the Transport Department on compassionate grounds.
