HYDERABAD: The Congress party's central leadership may have to look for a new leader to head the AP Congress Committee as the present incumbent D. Srinivas has reportedly expressed his reluctance to seek another term. Mr. Srinivas is said to have made up his mind to step down after his two-year term ends sometime next month, considering his second successive defeat in the recent Assembly elections. It is understood that Mr. Srinivas, who reluctantly contested the recent byelections from Nizamabad Urban constituency at the direction of the high command, expressed fears that his defeat would jeopardise his political career. Earlier this month, he went to New Delhi to call on the central leaders. He is likely to continue in the office till the party's organisational polls are completed and the new AICC president was elected. Sources in the APCC said the high command was likely to nominate another leader from Telangana as Chief Minister K. Rosaiah hailed from Andhra region. The race for the top post has already hotted up with seniors taking a shot at it. Sources maintained that leadership was looking at a person from Reddy or SC community. The names of former Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy and former Home Minister K. Jana Reddy are already doing the rounds. Sources said Mr. Suresh Reddy, who lost the last Assembly election from Armoor constituency, was the front-runner with his clean and non-controversial image and acceptability among the party cadres of all regions. Interestingly, a senior APCC functionary from Andhra region said Mr. Suresh Reddy's name was recommended by several MPs and legislators from the other two regions. They reportedly pointed out that the party at this juncture needed a person acceptable to all regions. Mr. Jana Reddy was said to be using his contacts in New Delhi to strengthen his case. Rajya Sabha members Nandi Yellaiah and Mallu Ravi and Marketing and Warehousing Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha were said to be the other contenders.
