Arun stars in Grand Slam's victory

Chennai: Left-arm spinner V. Arun Kumar ran through Falcon CC's batting to return figures of eight for 48 and propel Grand Slam to a 141-run victory in round seven of the TNCA first division league here on Thursday. Arun Kumar had scalped five wickets in Falcon's first innings.

Starting day three at 97 for six in its second innings, Grand Slam declared at 170 for nine, setting Falcon 241 for victory. Off spinner A.K. Balachander was Falcon's most impressive bowler, taking six wickets for 55.

Falcon's chase lasted only 46.2 overs, and got it to its eventual total of 89 thanks to a 46-run stand for the eighth wicket between Sreekumar Nair (35) and M. Vijay Bharat Ram (31). Arun Kumar's eight wickets took his match tally to 13 and his season total to 35.

Meanwhile, Aruna CC got the better of a tight encounter against Parry's, winning by 14 runs after the day began with Parry's needing 18 to win with the last pair at the crease. Leg spinner M.P. Rajesh, who bagged five wickets in the first innings, bowled number 11 Senthil Kumar with the fifth ball of the morning.

Trotters avoids defeat

Globe Trotters batsmen Y. Gnaneswara Rao (79, 86b, 8x4, 2x6) and U. Sushil (41) averted the possibility of outright defeat against Young Stars with a 118-run stand for the sixth wicket. The scores: At RKM-Viveka: Grand Slam 240 and 170 for nine decl. in 50 overs (Hemang Badani 40 not out, A.T. Balachander six for 55) bt Falcon CC 170 and 99 in 46.2 overs (V. Arun Kumar eight for 48). Points: Grand Slam 8 (total after round seven – 29), Falcon 0 (12).

At Murugappa: Aruna CC 161 and 95 bt Parry's 153 and 89 in 34.5 overs (M.P. Rajesh four for 32). Points: Aruna 8 (33), Parry's 0 (13).

At IC-Guru Nanak: Alwarpet 338 drew with Vijay CC 456 for nine decl. in 131 overs (K.B. Arun Karthik 118, Anirudh Kasturi 82, V. Maaruthi Raghav 89, V.T. Sunil Thomas 50 not out, Prasanth K. Varma five for 167). Points: Vijay 5 (31), Alwarpet 2 (18).

At SRMC: Globe Trotters 243 and 250 for nine decl. in 49.5 overs (S. Aniruda 51, X. Thalaivan Sargunam 49, Y. Gnaneswara Rao 79, U. Sushil 41) drew with Young Stars 276 and 104 for four in 44 overs. Points: Young Stars 5 (30), Globe Trotters 2 (33).

At CPT-IP: India Pistons 346 and 131 for six in 44 overs (C. Ganapathy 50 not out) drew with Jolly Rovers 259 in 81.5 overs (M. Vijay 49, R. Sathish 53, M. Ashwin four for 63, A.C. Prathiban five for 53). Points: India Pistons 5 (27), Jolly Rovers 2 (25).

At MAC: Indian Bank 441 drew with IOB 248 in 88.5 overs (L.N. Prasad Reddy 65, B. Aparajith six for 66). Points: Indian Bank 5 (21), IOB 2 (19) .

Asia road racing

The fourth round of the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championship will kick start at the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT) in Irungattukottai here on August 20.

Marking the midpoint of the championship, the fourth round will see an intense battle for supremacy in the Underbone 115 cc and SuperSports 600 cc categories.

The event, brought to the city by the Madras Motor Sports Club, in collaboration with Two Wheels Motor Racing (TWMR) and Federation Motor Sports Club of India, will see participation by local rider Preetham Dev Moses of Moto-Rev India in the 600 cc category.

Ishan in last four

Ishan Hussain made it to the semifinal of the ABI-Showa Tech Junior tennis tournament after getting the better of Sravan Karthikeyan 6-4, 6-2 here on Thursday.

Malik Jalal and Mohammad Zameer recorded a 21-7, 21-7 win over J.K. Reddy and Vijay Bhaskar in the second round of the Naidu Hall-Andhra Club badminton tournament here.
