Domestic workers plan to conduct State-wide agitation

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: Members of Tamizhnadu Veetu Velai Thozhilalar Sangam (Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers' Association) have planned to organise a State-wide agitation on August 18, said its State president G. Banumathi and coordinator Clara here on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, they said that soon after the 2004 elections, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had stated in its national common minimum programme that it was committed to ensure the welfare and well-being of all workers, particularly those in the unorganised sector who constituted 93 per cent of the workforce. In line with it, the Unorganised Sector Workers Social Security Bill-2007 was passed in the Rajya Sabha in September, 2008, and in the Lok Sabha in December that year. The President of India gave her assent to the Bill.

Meanwhile, in the following March, the governing body of the International Labour Organisation (India is a member) agreed to put ‘decent work for domestic workers' on the agenda in the International Labour Congress-2010 with the objective of developing an ILO instrument.

The Union Ministry of Labour considered the views of various stakeholders in preparing its response on the scope and content of the proposed instrument.

To draw the attention of the government, the association would stage demonstrations at the district headquarters in the State on August 18.
