PALAKKAD: Agriculture officers of the district will go on strike and boycott all public functions of the government like Onam Bazar as part of their State-wide agitation on August 17 ((Farmer's Day). They will not report for duty from that day in protest against their promotions being withheld even after 25 years of service. The Association of Agriculture Officers, Kerala, in its meeting held here on Friday, said that 1,200 agriculture officers in the State had not received promotion and were continuing in the entry cadre. Of them, 280 had joined service in 1987. They said that though there are very few chances for agriculture officers to get promotion, even the available posts were being filled by promoting scientific assistants to the post of assistant soil chemists in place of assistant directors of agriculture. — Staff Reporter
