“Rs. 80 crore disbursed to construction workers”

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: In the last four-and-a-half years of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rule, a huge sum of over Rs. 80 crore had been disbursed to workers under different categories, said Tamil Nadu Construction Workers' Welfare Board chairman Ponkumar here on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, he said that ever since the Board was established, a total of Rs. 104 crore had been disbursed to its members following deaths, accidents, injuries and pension among other cases. With the Chief Minister's initiative, more workers in different unorganised sectors had been identified and brought under the fold.

A state-of-the-art training centre was under construction in Kancheepuram. At the 25-acre campus, unskilled workers would get training so that they could equip themselves and enhance their economic standards, Mr. Ponkumar said.

With construction activities being carried out all over the State, trained workers would be an asset, he said. Out of the 20.14 lakh workers registered as members in the Board, 3.26 lakh had received Rs. 104 crore. At the Board meeting, some of the members objected to the inclusion of real estate agents as members. Financial assistance to migrant labourers, vacancies in the Department of Labour, non-filling of vacant positions and withholding promotions were discussed.
