Trivedi for reforms in all health regulatory bodies

NEW DELHI: Even as the Bill to amend the Medical Council of India Act, 1956 is being discussed in Parliament, there is a demand for bringing reforms in the Dental Council of India, the Indian Nursing Council and other health-related regulatory bodies.
Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Trivedi has suggested that fresh ordinances be promulgated — as was done in the case of the Medical Council of India (MCI) — to curb allegations of malpractices and corruption made against them. The creation of the overarching regulatory body, the National Council for Human Resource in Health, should also be expedited, Mr. Trivedi said in a letter to Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Quoting media reports and some cases brought to his notice, he pointed out that it has been said that deserving institutions were denied permission by these councils even after more than one round of inspections by the teams sent by the council concerned.
“At the same time, there are also cases where it is alleged that undeserving institutions without proper infrastructure and faculty have been granted permission to conduct courses and given recognition in due course. This has been happening even when the officers in the Ministry, the intellectuals, medical fraternity, the students, politicians and the public in general have been aware of such malpractices. This needs to be checked and we need to initiate reforms without any further delay,” he said in the letter.
