BANGALORE: The State Government on Friday handed over a cheque for Rs. 1.72 crore to the Karnataka High Court to construct a modern canteen for advocates. Sources in the High Court told The Hindu that the new Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, J.S. Khehar, personally looked into the file relating to the construction of the canteen building and cleared it. The Chief Justice along with president of the Advocates' Association of Bangalore (AAB) K.N. Putte Gowda and others had inspected the site. With the advocates pressing their demand for a modern canteen, the High Court agreed to it. Since construction of any kind is banned in the Cubbon Park and the court comes within the park limits, permission had to be sought for constructing a building. The site for the new canteen is on the northern side of the High Court. Though the High Court approved the plan last year, it was not executed as advocates rose in revolt against the then Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran. The canteen will be built in such a manner that it will be in harmony with other buildings, including the High Court and the Vidhana Soudha. It will be painted brick-red and the facade will resemble the front view of the High Court.
