Gates of Lalur dump yard locked

Thrissur: The police on Saturday took into custody 15 activists of the Lalur Malineekarana Virudha Samara Samithi and writer Sara Joseph after they blocked the vehicles transporting waste to Lalur, the Thrissur Corporation's waste disposal site, and locked the gates of a garbage treatment plant at Lalur.

The others taken into custody included samithi chairman T.K. Vasu, Raghunath Kazhungil, C.P. Jose, K.V. Abdul Aziz, K.K. Shajahan, K.K. Omana, Sreedharan Therambil, K.G. Anil Kumar, Prabhakaran Lalur, Sunil Lalur, Omana Joeboy and Rosily Mathew. They were released later.

Since August 11, the activists had been blocking the vehicles in protest against the delay in implementing the Lalur Model Project for Solid Waste Management.

Support sought

Addressing a protest meeting, Ms. Sara Joseph urged all residents of Thrissur to express solidarity with the people of Lalur and join in their agitation.

Mr. T.K. Vasu said the samithi would continue to block the vehicles transporting waste till the corporation reached a lasting solution to the waste management problems.
