Subsidised oil, vegetables for Onam

KOCHI: The Vegetable Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK) will open its subsidised vegetable sales stall for the Onam season at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium grounds, Kaloor, on Monday.

Minister for Agriculture Mullakkara Ratnakaran will inaugurate the outlet at a function scheduled for 9 a. m. Dominic Presentation, MLA, will preside. The Onam sales will be on till August 22.

The outlet in Kaloor will be among the two mega vegetable stalls that will be operated by VFPCK for the Onam season with financial help from the Agriculture Department. The other mega stall will be in the State capital.

The Agriculture Department has approved a Rs. 1.97-crore market intervention plan for the Onam festival season when vegetable demand peak in the State. The money for subsidised vegetable sales has been distributed among various agencies to open a total of 248 stalls.

The Department of Agriculture will operate 16 stalls and has been allotted Rs. 41 lakh. Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council will operate 100 stalls, including the ones in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, and has been allotted Rs. 25 lakh. Horticorp has been allotted Rs. 60 lakh and will operate 131 stalls and State Horticulture Mission has been allotted Rs. three lakh to operate on stall.

Season outlets

Kerafed has been allotted Rs. 60 lakh. The money will be used to sell coconut oils with a subsidy of Rs. 9 per litre. It is expected that the Kerafed will sell around 2,000 tonnes of coconut oil through the Onam season outlets.

The Department of Agriculture will conduct State-level; District-level and Taluk-level vegetable fairs. The State-level fair will be in Kollam at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh. District-level fairs will be in Thrivuananthapuram, Pahtanathitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode. Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod. There will be vegetable fairs at two sub-centres of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. VFPCK will hold the fairs also at Kollam and Kottayam as well as in 96 panchayats. Horticorp will run a super bazaar at Pazhavangadi and open 39 new stalls for the Onam season. Horticorp will also distribute subsidised Onam kits.
