Sai Meera upset

Chennai: Naren Swaminathan of Jawahar Vidyalaya School surprised eleventh seed and Woman International Master Sai Meera of Indian Bank in the third round of the S.K. Narasimhan Memorial rating chess tournament at the Nehru Stadium on Sunday.

As many as 21 players — including International Masters, Rahul Sangma, G.B. Prakash, Shyam Nikhil and Sudhakar Babu — lead with full three points at the end of day two.

Top seed Sangma won without much difficulty in 31 moves with the white pieces while Prakash won in 36 moves using the Dutch defence with the black pieces.

The results (round three): Rahul Sangma 3 bt K.G. Chaithanyaa 2; J. Yohan 2 lost to G.B. Prakash 3; P. Shyam Nikhil 3 bt Jaydeep Sharma 2; S. Prasannaa 2.5 drew with P. Maheswaran 2.5; G.A. Stany 3 bt G. Lasya 2; P. Ganesh 2.5 drew with Navin Kanna 2.5; Sudhakar Babu 3 bt S. Sathyanarayanan 2; T. Chitaranjan 2 lost to Ram S Krishnan 3; C.R.G. Krishna 3 bt Abdul Latheef 2; Shaik Sydulu 2 lost to O.T. Anilkumar 3; Sai Meera 2 lost to Naren Swaminathan 3.
