VELLORE: Women are yet to achieve equality with men in India, as could be seen from the presence of so many Acts aimed at ensuring the rights of women and protection to women, said H. M. Jayaram, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Vellore Range. Participating in the 44th anniversary celebrations of the Gandhinagar Ladies Club on the club premises in Gandhinagar near here on Saturday, Mr. Jayaram said that there were a plethora of laws for women, such as the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961, special provisions under the Indian Penal Code to deal with dowry harassment and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, while there were no acts for men. This clearly showed that women were yet to attain equality with men in society. But, he pointed out that there was greater participation of women in social, cultural, political and sports activities. Vijaya, secretary of the club, won the rolling cup in the sports competitions conducted for the members of the Club. Mrs. Lakshmi Jayaram, wife of Mr. Jayaram, distributed the rolling cup and prizes to the winners of the various sports competitions. Thilagavathi Ramaiah, founder of the Gandhinagar Ladies Club presided.
