Navneeth & Maitreyi triumph

BANGALORE: A.R. Navneeth and Maitreyi Bailoor emerged as the men's and women's singles champions respectively in the LIC Cup State-ranking table tennis tournament conducted by the Belgaum District Table Tennis Association ( BDTTA) at Belgaum on Sunday.

In the men's final, Navneeth avenged his defeat at the hands of C.P. Karthik, with a 7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-5 victory. Maitreyi trailing 1-3, rallied to beat Aishwariya Bidri 11-9, 15-17, 10-12, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-5 in the women's final.

Men: A.R. Navneeth bt C.P. Karthik 7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-5.

Youth boys: C.P. Karthik bt A.R. Navneeth 5-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-5, 11-5,

Women: Maitreyi Bailoor bt Aishwariya Bidri 11-9, 15-17, 10-12, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-5.

Team event (Men): South Western Railway bt Canara Bank 3-1 .

Abhimanyu advances

Local lad Abhimanyu Reddy knocked out the third seed Vatsin Thaker of Maharashtra 5-4(6), 5-3 in the opening round of the boys' under-12 event in the Enerzal AITA Talent Series tennis tournament here on Monday.

Top-seeded Aryan Goveas registered a fluent 4-1, 4-1 victory over Jude Leander of Andhra Pradesh.

Amogha wins

H.A. Amogha claimed the boys' under-14 title with seven points after the seventh and final round in the Worrirors children's chess tournament here on Sunday.

Other winners: Under-14 (Girls): M.R. Swathi (6 pts.). Under-12: P. Shet Praneetha (6). Under-10: (Boys): U. Raghunandan (6.5). Under-8: P. Jagdish (6.5) .

NGVJ prevails

National Games Village Jazz (NGVJ) snatched a close 48-43 win over Young Orions Bulls despite trailing 18-22 at the halfway stage in the men's Club Division of the NBA-Mahindra weekend basketball league at the Sree Kanteerava stadium courts here on Sunday.

Somiah triumphs

C.G. Somiah pipped Shreepad Renu to win the Open event in the stable ford format Independence Day trophy golf tournament held at the KGA course here on August 14 and 15. Somiah tallied 35 points to Renu's 34.

The results:

Open event: Winner : C.G. Somiah - 35 pts, Runner-up: Shreepad Renu -34 pts.

Handicap event: Winner : Sumit Rathor - 43pts, Runner-up :Sai Papineni 43pts. (On better back nine scores of 21 pts).

Ladies event : Winner: Dhanalakshmi Rice 37pts, Runner-up: Sangeeta Varma 35pts .

Close win for MEG

MEG defeated MLI 3-2 in a close match in the Travancore Cup hockey tournament, at the KSHA stadium here on Monday. Poovanna, Muthanna and Rajesh scored for the victors while Sunil Kumar and Ganesh Patil got on the score sheet for MLI.

Meanwhile, in the Rotary Dr. G.S. Randhawa Memorial inter-school hockey tournament, Rashtriya Military School and St. Germain High School became the first two teams to make it to the semifinals.

Walkover

The former received a walk-over from Kendriya Vidyalaya, NAL, in the first quarterfinal while St. Germain's trounced St. John's High School 3-0 in the second.

Ganesh to lead

Ganesh Satish will lead a young Karnataka squad in the Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament in Chennai.

Karnataka will play its first match against Madhya Pradesh in the game commencing on Tuesday.

The tournament concludes on August 31.

Facile win

Four goals by right-in Dhananjaya (20th, 28th, 48th & 53rd minutes) helped SBRR Mahajana FGC register a facile 6-0 win over Sadvidya Semi-Residential PU College (Mysore).

With this win SBRR Mahajana FGC enter the semifinals of the college boys' section in the eighth Andolana Cup district-level hockey tournament, conducted by the National Sports Day Celebration Committee, at the Chamundivihar hockey grounds, Mysore, on Monday.

Cariappa (second minute) and Siddarth (ninth) were the other scorers for the winner.

In the other matches, NIE College of Engineering registered a 4-3 win over Marimallappa's PU College while Cauvery PU College recorded a narrow 1-0 win over University Evening College in the inaugural game.
