VISAKHAPATNAM: The Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway celebrated Independence Day with enthusiasm at various places on the division. Waltair Divisional Railway Manager N. Kashinath, while unfurling the National Flag said that the division had registered an increase in freight earnings by 22.15 per cent.
He took the ‘Rashtriya Salami' presented by the contingents of Railway Protection Force, Scouts and Guides and Civil Defence at the RPF New Parade Ground in the city.
A large number of railway officers, staff and their family members attended the celebrations at which he extended warm greetings to them and promised to take care of their welfare to ensure high productivity.
The freight earnings increased following the division registering a record 45.19 million metric tonnes goods handling. In the first quarter the growth of freight traffic during current fiscal was 31.74 per cent by transporting 12.41 million metric tonnes.
Passenger traffic growth was 9.72 per cent. The gross revenue of the division in 2009-2010 was Rs. 3485.22 crores marking a 21.10 improvement over the earnings of the previous year. On this occasion Additional Divisional Railway Manager C.S. Jeengar read the message of East Coast Railway General Manager A.K. Vohra, highlighting the developmental works and various welfare activities being taken up.
