TIRUPATTUR: The Tirupattur police are taking steps to create awareness among bank customers about safe handling of cash. The department has also advised a number of banks in the sub-division to install additional Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras facing the entrance to the bank, parking lot and section of road to enhance monitoring measures. The department had convened a meeting with bank managers recently to create awareness of safety measures. It has put up display boards for bank customers on do's and don'ts when withdrawing huge cash and how to take it safely. “So far, we have put up permanent display boards with messages for bank customers at 15 banks in Tirupattur taluk and town police station limits and at Jolarpet. It contains messages on how bank customers should be careful when withdrawing huge cash. They should not count the cash in the open or keep in carelessly in a bag or keep it in their two-wheeler box and go to the shop and also should carefully watch for strangers around them,” a police official said. The department had also distributed around 1,000 pamphlets with awareness messages to bank customers earlier. “As the next step, we are planning to put up display boards with visual representation of do's and don'ts so that we can draw the attention of the people take a look at the boards,” he added. Meanwhile, to step up monitoring measures in and around the banks, the police department has suggested that an additional CCTV camera be installed in the banks. “The banks already have CCTVs to monitor the cash counter, entrance and persons seated in the hall. We have advised that one more CCTV camera be installed in the banks to monitor the outside of the bank covering the entrance, parking lot and section of the road. Through this, the banks can monitor what happens in the area outside the bank. The recording is stored for 90 days and tracing for any activity will be easy,” the official explained. Similarly, the banks have been asked to increase security at the ATM counters by deploying security personnel especially during the night hours and install CCTVs, he mentioned. “Some banks have engaged security personnel throughout the day. We have also asked the banks to engage armed guards to enhance safety,” he added.
