It is hopeful of getting matching fund from government

SRIKAKULAM: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University of Srikakulam has sought one-time grant of Rs. 5 crores from the University Grant Commission. The UGC grant is need of the hour as the new university is planning to improve the infrastructure on the campus. It has also decided to introduce new courses once funds are sanctioned by the UGC.

The authorities of the university are hopeful that the State government will also release Rs. 5 crores as a matching grant to develop the university on par with other major institutes in the country. Its Vice-Chancellor S.V. Sudhakar has told The Hindu that the new universities are eligible to get one-time grant from the commission under ‘UGC-12B' scheme.

“We have been pursuing the proposal with both government and UGC so that we can overcome financial crunch. The funds will certainly enable the university to introduce new courses and appoint additional teaching staff,” says Mr. Sudhakar.

Vacancies

According to him, the university sought the permission from the AP State Higher Education Council to fill the existing vacancies also.

The university is planning to hold orientation programmes for the lecturers of affiliated colleges. The orientation classes will be conducted in Srikakulam, Palakonda and Tekkali very soon. The authorities will ask the teaching staff to adhere to the academic calendar and new guidelines of the university.

Dharmana's directive

Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao on Tuesday asked the district administration to ensure cleanliness in villages so that seasonal diseases could be controlled effectively. The Minister, who visited several villages in Gara mandal, expressed displeasure over poor sanitation in rural areas.

The Minister's advise assumed significance as more than 50 persons died of seasonal diseases for the last two months. Mr. Prasada Rao distributed pattadar passbooks to farmers in Nagireddy Peta, Neelapu Peta and other places.

He asked the officials of all departments to be present during his visits so that the grievances of the people could be referred to them immediately. Earlier, the Minister inaugurated new cement roads in 12th and 15th wards. Srikakulam Municipality spent around Rs.6 lakhs on the construction of new roads in the town.
