SILK foundry unit being modernised

OTTAPPALAM: Industries Minister Elamaram Karim inaugurated the Rs.4.7-crore modernisation project of the foundry unit of Steel Industrials Kerala Ltd. (SILK) here on Tuesday.

The modernisation will increase the unit's production capacity to 2,400 tonnes of value-added casting annually.

The project envisages Rs.1.42 crore for infrastructure development, Rs.1.78 crore for mechanisation and another Rs.1.5 crore for allied ancillary development. It is expected to bring in a turnover of around Rs.17 crore annually, the Minister said.

It will provide direct employment to 250 people and indirect employment to an equal number.

The modernised unit will manufacture flywheel, engine base, cylinder block, machine body and gears.
