Congress urges UPA to pass Bill on land acquisition
Special Correspondent
New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday appealed to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to swiftly pass the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill and the Resettlement and Rehabilitation Bill to bring about a balance between the needs of land owners and the requirements of industry.
Referring to the recent firing by the police on agitating farmers near Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari pointed out that such clashes had been reported from time to time from other States as well. If the government hoped to prevent the repetition of this sort of face-off between the people and the police, then it should swiftly bring in the requisite legislation, he said. He pointed out that both Bills had been passed in the Lok Sabha in February, 2009.
Thereafter, as the House was dissolved before the Bills could come to the Rajya Sabha, they lapsed.
Mr. Tewari said that in a coalition government, it was “perfectly legitimate” for all parties to have a viewpoint, but the “essence of democracy was to consult everyone and arrive at consensus.”
