Collector organises raids on roadside eateries

CUTTACK: Local civil supply officials under the supervision of district Collector Kishore Kumar Mohanty raided at least 10 hotels and roadside food joints in Nischintkoili block, about, 60 km from here on Tuesday and seized huge quantities of adulterated and stale food items, many illegal cooking gas cylinders and impermissible synthetic pigments.

Tipped off by some local people that adulterated and stale food items were sold in the area, the district administration formed a team comprising officials from Food and Civil Supply Departments and raided the hotels and sweet stalls of the locality.

“We found food items of two to three days old were kept inside many hotels of the locality”, said an official of the department. Raids were conducted on some sweet stalls also, the official added.

Nearly five quintals of food items and sweets were seized from these erring hotels and were dumped, informed the district Sub-Collector Jyotish Chandra Das, who also participated in the raids. Similarly, six illegal cooking gas cylinders were also seized from these hotels; he added saying impermissible synthetic food pigments which are not for human consumption were also found in some hotel and stalls.

“The hotel owners were reprimanded and were warned of stringent actions if they continue to sell adulterated food items henceforth”, the Sub-Collector said.
