Clarification

HYDERABAD: Jain monks wear a ‘Muppati' on their face and hold a ‘Punjani' in their hand. A ‘Muppati' is a cloth tied on the mouth with the help of a string and a ‘Punjani' is a special broom to sweep away insects from the path or to sweep the place where the monks sit, points out V. Deepesh Surana, a reader. His clarification was in response to a news item “Jain Youth turn ‘monks' for a day” published in the August 16 edition of The Hindu which had erroneously defined a ‘Muppati'.
