Tirupur: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticised the poor hygiene and infrastructure at the district Headquarters hospital here, which, according to the party, has been causing immense hardship to the patients from lower economic strata of the society. The party highlighted the demands of common man for better services and facilities at the district headquarters at a demonstration held here on Wednesday. Party town secretary M. Rajagopal said that toilet and drinking water facilities were almost non-existent in the out-patient unit of the hospital which was frequented by about 2,000 patients every day. Similarly, toilets at the in-patient block were always unclean and foul smell emanates from it. Lack of adequate technicians at the blood and urine testing laboratory also came in for the criticism. Posts vacant “Even though seven posts of technicians were lying vacant for the past many months, no effort is being taken by the health department officials to fill it,” Mr. Rajagopal said. Another serious problem faced by the patients and their kin, according to Mr. Rajagopal, is the lack of adequate number of counters to distribute medicines at the pharmacy. “They should open at least two more counters to reduce the length of queues at the existing two,” he said.
