COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Government Collegiate Teachers' Association (TNGCTA) has opposed the proposed transfer of nearly 150 acres of Bharathiar University land to Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore. According to General Secretary of the association S. Tamil Mani, land owners from whom the 1,000-odd acres were acquired for Bharathiar University were yet to be paid the compensation. “Till date the compensation package awarded to the original land owners is mired in controversy. Under these circumstances, the transfer of land will not fulfil the present need and future expansion plans,” he added. Since the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Bharathiar University, and Government Law College, were all situated on the same road, the addition of another university would add to the traffic woes of the area, he said. A suggestion had been made for locating Anna University of Technology on the road leading to Avanashi or the one leading to Palladam. The same suggestion had also been extended for the proposed World Class University. The association had urged the Government to reconsider its decision on transfer of the BU land and arrange for a public hearing to come to a decision.
