ACICM against acquisition of farmland for industrial purposes

Special Correspondent

‘Nearly 8,178 acres of prime agricultural land identified in Mysore district'

ACICM warns of agitation if KIADB proposal

to acquire land is not withdrawn

‘KIADB should distribute the 300 acres of land with it to clear pending applications'

MYSORE: The Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM) has threatened to launch an agitation if the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) persists with acquiring agricultural land for industrial purposes.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, M. Lakshman, convener, ACICM, said that nearly 8,178 acres of prime agricultural land had been identified in Mysore district.

He said the land was spread over Hunsur and H.D. Kote taluks and was suited for agricultural purposes and added that groundwater could be tapped at 100 ft as the water table was high.

Mr. Lakshman said there were nearly 2,200 industries in Mysore spread over 5,000 acres of land and about 40 per cent of them had been declared sick industries while another 20 per cent were defuct.

Functioning industries

Only 40 per cent of the industries were functioning and even there industrial land had been converted to build apartments and the land use pattern had been changed for non-industrial purposes.

“When the Government has failed to provide requisite facilities for the existing industries and is unable to provide eight hours of power, water and access roads, what is the point of acquiring additional land,” asked Mr. Lakshman.

The ACICM said there were 200 applicants awaiting distribution of land to establish industries in Mysore and the KIADB had 300 acres of land. This should be distributed to clear the pending applications. Future requirements for industries should be based on demand, said the ACICM.

It urged the Chief Minister to direct the KIADB to withdraw its proposed move to acquire more than 8,000 acres of land in H.D. Kote and Hunsur taluks failing which an agitation would be inevitable, the ACICM said.

The KIADB has identified land near Bilikere, Ankanahalli, Handahalli, Haradanahalli, Doddabeechanahalli, Hullenahalli in Bilikere hobli.
