The two-day-old girl was sold to a childless couple in Kasaragod: police Police are looking for another accused in the case MANGALORE: A woman whose baby girl was “sold” to a couple in Kasaragod allegedly by her husband nearly two months ago was reunited with the child on Tuesday. Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh told presspersons here on Wednesday that police pursued the case based on a tip off, arrested two persons and reunited the baby with her mother. Mr. Singh said that Rehmat, a resident of Ullal who is married to Shameer, gave birth to a baby girl on June 26. Two days later when she was leaving the hospital after being discharged, her husband took away the baby from her and allegedly gave her to one Badruddin who was waiting in front of the hospital along with one K.K. Abdul. Mr. Singh said the baby was subsequently sold to a childless couple in Kasaragod. Based on a tip off, the police arrested Shameer and Badruddin, the middleman, and recovered Rs. 49,500 from them. They are on the look out for Abdul. A case has been registered against the three persons. Mr. Singh said that the baby was sold despite the existence of legal mechanism for adoption of children. There was a need to find out whether the accused had carried out similar deals earlier. Also, the reason behind the couple to buy the baby had to be looked into, he added. After Ms. Rehmat protested the sale of the baby, she was thrown out of the house by her husband, the Commissioner said. In a letter to the Police Commissioner Ms. Rehmat had said that she had to stay in her relative's house as her parents also turned her away. Mr. Singh said on Wednesday that Ms. Rehmat was staying with her sister. New office Mr. Singh announced that the foundation stone for the new office complex of the commissionerate would be laid by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on August 23. The building with 20,000 sq. ft area will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 3 crore. Interviews The commissionerate had received over 19,000 applications, most of them online, for 200 posts, he said. Interviews would be held soon at three venues — Nehru Maidan, Mangala Stadium, and New Mangalore Port ground — simultaneously. Seized The Ullal police have arrested three people, all natives of Assam, and seized 20 kg ganja from them, Mr. Singh said. The Bunder police have arrested four persons who were attempting to commit theft in a mobile phone shop near New Chitra Talkies, Mr. Singh said.
