Meeting at Bangalore on Monday and Tuesday on the eve of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), which begins in Hyderabad on Thursday, the General Assembly also elected Martin Grotschel (Germany) as the secretary, and Christine Rousseau (Canada) and Marcelo Viana (Brazil) as vice-presidents.

In addition, it elected six executive committee members, including Vasudevan Srinivas of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.

The other members are: Manuel de Leon (Spain), Yiming Long (China), Cheryl E. Praeger (Australia), John Francis Toland (UK) and Wendelin Werner (France).

Professor Daubechies is a professor at the Department of Mathematics at Princeton University, New Jersey and the first woman professor of mathematics at the University.
