Festive spirit:Women purchasing puja articles for Varalakshmi Vratam at Pushkara ghat in Rajahmundry on Thursday.

RAJAHMUNDRY: Despite rain, people in large numbers, particularly women, turned out on the streets on Thursday to buy articles needed to perform Varalakshmi Vratam. The festival, which is meant only for women and girls, is celebrated on the Friday just before the full moon day or pournima of Sravana masam.

In Rajahmundry, the Main Road, Pushkaraghat and Devi chowk were thronged by women and men buying articles and the prices of almost all the puja articles were doubled by vendors keeping the festival in view.

Traffic was completely out of gear.

Gold shops were flooded by women buying `Astalakshmi Kalash' in silver (in pot model) or a gram of gold to offer to goddess Varalakshmi. Vankayalavari Street and Pushkara Ghat road where many gold shops are situated, were crowded.
