COIMBATORE: India's pride lies in its diversity, which is both strength and weakness, B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore Kendra, has said.

Speaking at the Nalli-Thisai Ettum Translation Awards, organised here recently, he said no other country was as much diversified as India. It was a strength to the nation. And it was also weakness, because people of one culture failed to understand the other.

Speakers of one language could have learnt the other but we as Indians chose to study English, a foreign tongue, he added.

Mr. Vanavarayar asked the students to read a lot, learn and appreciate different cultures.

Former Union Minister M.P. Veerendrakumar released the Hindi translation of R. Natarajan's Tamil short stories. A. Natarajan, former station director, Doordarshan, Chennai, received the first copy. Nalli Kuppusamy Chettiar of Nalli saris presided over the function.

This year, the organisers presented 14 translations for the ‘Nalli-Thisai Ettum Translation' award. Kurinchi Velan, Editor, Thisai Etthum, proposed the vote of thanks.
