Murder, ragging case registered in student's death case

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Ghaziabad Police have registered a case of murder and ragging against six persons, including the Dean and a second year student of the SRM Institute of Technology and Management in connection with the mysterious death of Abhishek Sah.

The victim had died after he purportedly fell from the fourth floor of his hostel building on Sunday.

Abhishek's father Jaikant Sah on Wednesday said the police acted promptly on his complaint and registered a case under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including murder and conspiracy, and Sections 3 and 4 of the Prohibition of Ragging Act. “The Institute's Dean and a second year student involved in the ragging have been named in the First Information Report. It is now the job of the police to identify the other four. They visited the Institute today to carry out enquiries. They also need to question the second year student to identify the others involved,” said Mr. Sah.

Mr. Sah, a resident of Ranchi in Jharkhand, had earlier alleged that his son had lodged a complaint of ragging with the Dean, but no concrete action was taken then. “I have lost my only son, I want justice,” he said, seeking stringent action against those involved.

The police are collecting call details of Abhishek's mobile phone to ascertain if he was talking over the phone when he apparently fell from the under-construction fourth floor of the building on Sunday night.

“We will record statements of the hostellers and others involved to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the incident,” said a police officer.
