Postal cover on trade and commerce in Madras

CHENNAI: After forts, light houses and bridges of Madras, this year's special postal cover, to commemorate the 371st birthday of the city, is on the theme ‘Prosperity of Trade and Commerce in Madras'.

The imposing Bank of Madras stands tall on one side, while landmarks such as the Marina Beach, State Bank of India, port and roads are on the other side of the postal cover which was released on Thursday.

“Last year, we printed 2,500 postal covers and it was picked up by collectors and other enthusiasts. This year too it should be a sell-out,” said D.H. Rao of Madras Heritage Lovers Forum.

The commemorative cover was released by T. Murthy, Post Master General (Business Development), Tamil Nadu Circle, and received by Chief General Manager of State Bank of India (Chennai Circle) J. Chandrasekaran. A. Natarajan, former director, Doordarshan Kendra, participated in the function.

From a technician showcasing his antique collection of imported lamps and locks to photographs of the Pope's visit to Madras to the red buildings of the city, the three-day exhibition of Madras coins, stamps and books that opens on Friday at Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram, Kilpauk have a lot to take stock. If you are an antique lover and wish to add to your collection, quite a number of individuals are more than happy to help you.

Some such as S.A. Govindaraju are ready to part with the collection. The senior citizen has newspaper clippings of people, personalities and companies of different decades. The exhibition was inaugurated on Thursday.
