CHENNAI: O.T. Anilkumar of Kozhikode defeated Navin Kanna in the final round to become the first non-Chennai player to win the fifth S.K. Narasimhan memorial FIDE-rating open chess tournament which concluded at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday. Anilkumar, who tallied eight points, received a trophy and Rs. 25,000 from National champion B. Adhiban. International Master Shyam Nikhil finished second on tie-break, pushing IM Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank to the third spot after both ended with 7.5 points. The event was organised by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association in memory of S.K. Narasimhan (1918-1982), who served as FIDE vice president and also the secretary of TNSCA and AICF. The results (ninth and final round): O.T. Anilkumar bt Navin Kanna, Shyam Nikhil bt Ram S. Krishnan, Stany drew with C.R.G. Krishna, Sudhakar Babu bt Senthil Kumaran, S. Prasanna lost to Sangma, G.B. Prakash bt Bavankumar. Final placings (tie-break order): 1 O.T. Anilkumar (8); 2-3 P. Shyam Nikhil, Sudhakar Babu (7.5); 4-12 T.U. Navin Kanna, G.B. Prakash, Rahul Sangma, G.A. Stany, Ram S. Krishnan, C.R.G. Krishna, V.R. Bhatt, Akash Iyer and L. Barath (7 each) . — Arvind Aaron
