PALANI: The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited has plans to establish 500 Bharat Gas Rasoi Ghar, popularly known as community kitchens in the country during this fiscal as part of corporate social responsibility with an aim of helping poor and the downtrodden, said R.M. Gupta, Executive Director (LPG), BPCL. Talking to press persons after inaugurating a community kitchen, second in the district and third in the state, at the government hospital here on Friday, he said that 250 such kitchens would be established in southern zone alone. We had so far set up 70 kitchens. Community kitchens will be set up at panchayats, schools, colleges and hospitals. Priority had been given for hospitals only, he added. Briefing development and future plans of the Rs.50,000-crore company, the executive director said that the Bina refinery plant in Madhya Pradesh would start its full commercial production within six months. Both the Bina and Kochi refinery expansions will play a key role in enhancing our refinery capacity. Efforts were on to increase exploration and production of Kochi refinery, he added. BPCL Territory Manager S. Thangavelu, said this community kitchen project was part of the Central Government's Vision-2015 programme to make the domestic LPG available to the deprived sections of society through the common LPG kitchen mode. Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas drafted the features of the scheme. The company wanted to extend this facility to more government hospitals and remote villages, he said. The kitchen at GH has five stoves and piped gas supply. Initially, the BPC has offered four cylinders freely. Users have to pay just Rs.6 per hour for using gas stoves and Rs.3 for half hour. The kitchen would work round-the-clock on all seven days, he added. Joint Direct of Health Services T. Jayabal said that this community kitchen was not only useful to attendants of in-patients but also helpful for doctors and nurses at night shift. Such facility would help doctors function effectively during late hours, he added. Resident Medical Officer M. Raju and Kurian P. Chandy, Regional LPG Manager (Southern Region), were present.
