Farmers demand early disposal of petitions

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: Frustrated over the agonising delay in getting permission for taking silt from the dry irrigation tank beds, farmers have appealed to the district administration to simplify the norms and expedite the scrutiny of their applications.

Speaking at a farmers' grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday, agriculturist K. Madasamy said that even after the Collector had already assured that the farmers' petition for getting permission to take tank silt would be cleared within 15 days, the officials were postponing the disposal of their applications even beyond 30 days, causing several hardship.

“We've to spend nearly Rs. 5,000 every time to get the permission. In some instances, the farmers from Annamali Pudur and Ooththumalai are facing cases filed by the revenue officials though they had obtained permission from competent officials for taking silt from the tanks,” Mr. Madasamy said.

However, the officials replied that the norms for permission had been simplified.

District Revenue Officer P. Ramanasaraswathi, who was chairing the meeting, said the procedure had been simplified in the recent past.

“If the farmers still have grievances, they can meet the respective tahsildars to get proper remedy. Action will be taken against the officials who intentionally cause delay,” she said.

Even as the DRO was giving her assurance, a section of the farmers warned of a demonstration or hunger strike on the Collectorate premises itself in protest.
