Compensation sought for displaced villagers

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Activists of the Gana Sangram Samity (GSS) handed over a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Gopalpur Industrial Park.

The GSS had spearheaded the anti-Tata Steel agitation in Ganjam district during the nineties. But now the GSS did not oppose the Gopalpur Industrial Park project being taken up on the land taken over for the now-shelved mega steel project of the company.

The GSS activists, led by its chairman and former CPI MLA N. Narayan Reddy, attended the function. Mr. Reddy handed over the memorandum. Through the memorandum the GSS activists alleged that some villagers of Jagannathpur were yet to get compensation for eight acres of land taken over by Tata Steel. Similarly inhabitants of Chamakhandi were yet to get compensation for 13 ponds. They alleged that several more displaced persons were waiting for compensation.

They demanded that people displaced for the shelved steel project, who were living in rehabilitation colony, should be provided employment opportunity by Tata Steel. Their other demands included establishment of a training centre for skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labour force of Ganjam district opening of an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and modern medical centre in Ganjam district.
