Crop damage in flood-hit areas identified

Direction for speedy solution of farmers' pending cases

CHANDIGARH: On the basis of damage to crops in the recent floods in Haryana assessed through the special girdawari, the total relief payable to the farmers has been calculated as over Rs.94.93 crore as per the State norms, Haryana Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati said here on Friday.

Presiding over the meeting of a committee administering the Haryana Calamity Relief Fund, she directed that the old cases be cleared within a month and immediate compensation be provided to the farmers.

Assessment

Special girdawari had been conducted in the districts of Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Fatehabad and Sirsa to assess crop damage.

On the basis of the girdawari, maximum damage to the paddy crop was seen in Fatehabad district, followed by Kurukshetra, Sirsa, Ambala, Kaithal and Yamunanagar. Similarly, the damage to the cottin crop was highest in Sirsa, followed by Fatehabad, Kurukshetra, Ambala , Kaithal and Yamunanagar.

Situation under control

Mrs. Gulati said that as the situation in flood-affected areas had been brought under control, all possible ways would be explored to reap the benefit of the excessive water. She directed the Irrigation Department to prepare a scheme for recharging of the ground water through bore wells in the areas where water was still standing.

Other water conservation options, which can be explored, are revival of lakes and recharging of water bodies.
