The Mother through the eyes of lens

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: The New Delhi office of UNESCO will host a nine-day photo exhibition on Mother Teresa at Visual Arts Gallery in India Habitat Centre beginning Monday.

“Mother Teresa: A Life Dedicated” will display photographs of Mother Teresa that have been captured by veteran photographer Raghu Rai, who first got an opportunity to meet her in 1970s. According to UNESCO, the relationship of trust that Raghu Rai and Mother Teresa built over the years is apparent in his body of work. “Rai observed Mother Teresa's daily life and that of her community, successfully conveying its prayerful intensity and strength of commitment.”

The exhibition will be inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on August 23. Union Minister of State for HRD D. Purandeswari will the guest of honour on the occasion.

Having declared 2010-11 as the celebration year of the 100 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary of Mother Teresa (1910-1997) following the request of the Permanent Delegation of India, UNESCO believes that the celebration will be an excellent opportunity to explain to the young generation her message of compassion, tolerance, mutual respect, solidarity and peace. “Her work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world. She received a number of awards and distinctions including the Nobel Peace Prize, Bharat Ratna and the Balzan Prize.”

Mother Teresa, who was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”, had always stated: “By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world.” The show will go to Kolkata in October.
