NEW DELHI: The issue of alleged corruption in the preparations for the Commonwealth Games again rocked the Delhi Assembly on Friday when BJP MLA Karan Singh Tanwar accused a Delhi Minister of trying to protect the corrupt officials in a scam running into crores of rupees. Mr. Tanwar raised the issue during the Special Mention under Rule 280. He claimed that he had concrete proof to show that there was indeed a scandal involving the New Delhi Municipal Council and that the Minister was protecting the corrupt officials. At this several Congress Ministers raised objections. Delhi Development Minister Rajkumar Chauhan wondered how the Ministers were being accused when the NDMC was not under them. Labour Minister Mangat Ram Singh said that while Mr. Tanwar was a member of the Council, the Ministers had no role to play in it. Finance Minister A. K. Walia then got up to say that levelling such loose allegations was not right and the MLA should approach the courts or the Lokayukta. At this Leader of Opposition V.K. Malhotra came out in support of Mr. Tanwar to state that an MLA has the right to raise such issues in the House. Later, Mr. Tanwar submitted to the Speaker the papers which he claimed pointed to the alleged case of corruption. He also demanded that the matter be probed by appropriate authorities. During the Special Mention, Shoaib Iqbal of LJP charged that while crores have been spent for the Games, nothing has been done in the Walled City as a number of places of tourist interest are located therein.
