Polio eradication: thousands of students participate in marathon

College students and public ran for a distance of 21 km, school boys 10 km and school girls five km



Awareness:Students participating in Vellore Marathon on Saturday to create awareness of polio eradication.

VELLORE: Thousands of school and college students participated in the Vellore Marathon, organised jointly by Rotary International District 3230 and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), Vellore, in order to create awareness of the need for eradication of polio here on Saturday.

C. Rajendran, Collector of Vellore inaugurated the marathon of college students and the public. C. Gnanasekaran, Vellore MLA inaugurated the marathon for school boys, while P. Karthikeyan, Mayor of Vellore inaugurated the marathon for school girls. Olivannan, District Governor, R.I. District 3230 presided.

The college students and the public ran for a distance of about 21 km, the school boys ran of about 10 km and the school girls five km around Vellore and reached Nethaji Stadium, the venue of the prize-distribution function.

Prize winners

21-km category: I prize – Muthukumar of Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi (Rs.4,000); II prize – A. Saranraj of Sai Club (Rs.3,000); III prize – S. Sathish Kumar of Voorhees College (Rs.2,000).

10-km category: I – S. Sasikumar of Government Boys High School, Senji (Rs.3,000); II – S.A. Baskaran of Government Higher Secondary School, Panamadangi (Rs.2,000); III – N. Raja of Government High School, Vinnampalli (Rs.1,000).

5-km category: I – R. Anjugam of St. Mary's Higher Secondary School, Vellore (Rs.3,000); C. Sandhya of Government High School, Ponneri (Rs.2,000); III – V. Sandhya of Rocks Club (Rs.1,000.)

Mr. Rajendran distributed the prizes to the college students and members of the public, Mr. Gnanasekaran to the school boys and Mr. Karthikeyan to the school girls.
