CHENNAI: Doctors must have the perspective to serve at least a small segment of underprivileged people, said S.S.Badrinath, president and Chairman Emeritus, Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya.

He was delivering the First Vice Chancellor Lalitha Kameswaran Endowment Oration at Sri Ramachandra University here today. It is necessary to keep in mind that India is a poor country and doctors must do their duty for those who are unable to afford medical care.

Recalling an incident in the life of Lalitha Kameswaran, who also served as the first Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, he said when she was just seven years old she donated all her jewels to Mahatma Gandhi at a ‘non-cooperation rally' in Madurai.

He also urged the young members of his profession to be honest, straightforward and be humanistic. The lessons can be derived from the life of Lalitha Kameswaran, a fine administrator who would not hesitate to stand up for a just cause. Her life itself is a message, he said.

S.Rangaswami, Vice-Chancellor, SRU, said the University gratefully remembered the strong foundation that she had laid for an institution that is celebrating its silver jubilee this year.

S.Anandan, dean, A.Ravikumar, head, ENT Department were among those who spoke.

Lalitha Kameswaran's husband S.Kameswaran, and her son, Mohan Kameswaran, both eminent ENT surgeons, were present on the occasion.
