Officials asked to ensure strict enforcement of Forest Rights Act

Guntur: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes will submit a proposal for establishing an Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) in Guntur district for improving the living standards of tribal people. The tribal development schemes of Central and State Governments can be implemented in the best possible manner by ITDA while considerable progress had been achieved in the last few years, said Commission member K Kamala Kumari. Addressing the mediaafter reviewing tribal development issues at the DRC Meeting Hall here on Saturday, Ms. Kumari said the steps taken by Guntur district administration for development of the tribal communities were satisfactory. The proposed ITDA would help achieve better results as it would have dedicated funds and powers. There was a single commission for STsand Scs . The National Commission for STs was carved out of it for pooling the efforts made and resources allocated for tribal development. Administrative convenience was also one of the factors taken into consideration for creating the National Commission for STs. Similarly, a special agency for tribal development would be useful for foolproof implementation of the welfare schemes. At the review meeting, Kamala Kumari ordered the Education Department to solve problems faced by tribal candidates in getting appointments for teacher posts. There were also problems in enforcing the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act. The Forest Department has to take urgent steps in this regard, she instructed the officials concerned. Superintendent of Police (Urban) D.S. Chauhan, Additional Joint Collector Yakub Naik, District Revenue Officer M Venkateswarulu, District Tribal Welfare Officer Eswara Rao and others were present .
