Panaji: During the last three to four years there has been a fluctuation in the cashew production in Goa due to climate change, said Satish Tendulkar, Director of Agriculture, Goa on Saturday. Mr. Tendulkar was speaking at a seminar on the “New challenges in cashew production under current trends in climate changes”, a seminar jointly organised by ICAR Research complex for Goa, Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development, Cochin and Zuari Industries Limited, Goa at Old Goa. Mr. Tendulakr spoke on cashew scenario in Goa and said that besides increasing cashew production, cashew crop cultivation needs to be taken up on a large-scale to maintain Goa's greenery. Agriculture Department Secretary V.K. Jha urged all the stakeholders in the cashew industry to adopt innovative ideas and emphasised the need to make available better marketing facilities to the growers of cashew crop. Mr. Madhav Sahakari, a progressive farmer associated with Goan cooperative movement, said that though the area under cashew plantation in Goa has increased, the cashew processing capacity has not improved. Mr. Venkatesh Hubballi, Director, Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development - Cochin was present for the seminar which deliberated on various issues such as scenario of cashew development in India, Feni Industry in Goa-prospects and advances in cashew production technology.
